Paulie’s Pizza

It was the sweltering summer of 1989 in Kansas City. Cole Callander embraced his new found freedom thanks to his beat up old Ford truck gifted to him from his uncle. The world was his oyster, or... anchovy. He found a nearby pizza place, Paulie's Pizza, that was just opening and applied as a driver. Emboldened with independence and a paying job, there would be no stopping him this summer.

Cole finds working there slow, but the enigmatic and intimidating owner, T, continues to invite more of his friends to come work for him. On average, they deliver only a couple pizzas a night, are paid cash, and perfect their inane form of teenage banter arguing about movies, girls, sports, and everything else they pretend to be experts on. They quickly form a tight-knit bond with a cast of colorful characters, including the fiery-tempered cheerleader Veronica, whose father has mysterious connections, and the diminutive but no less bold Bailey, by whom Cole develops his first major crush.

As summer progresses, they begin to uncover the dark underbelly of Paulie's Pizza. T's past as the owner of a bar called the Wheel House, and his ties to the Black Hand criminal organization, are gradually revealed. The teens learn that Paulie's was intended to be a front for the Black Hand's illicit activities, and their successful business has drawn unwanted attention.

Through the lens of this coming-of-age tale, Paulie's Pizza explores themes of friendship, loyalty, and the ways in which a single summer can irrevocably shape the course of a young person's life. The rich characterizations, intricate plot, and the juxtaposition of light-hearted teenage antics with darker undercurrents create a compelling and multilayered narrative that builds toward a shocking conclusion.

Paulie's Pizza is a time machine back to the late 80's, big hair, unlimited potential, and learning that the world isn't as innocent as you expected it to be. This novel captures the grit, the heart, and the secret ingredients to make a successful pizza.

Chris Kamler's third book and first novel knocks it out of the park as it crosses streams between teenage drama, mob entanglement, and so much lighthearted fun.
